Are you considering a career change? Have you thought about board service? Yes, I said, board service.
You may wonder how you’ll find time to engage in board service when you already work 40 hours or more per week, have hobbies, or even have a family to care for. Honestly, you will find a way to carve out time for those things you want. For instance, a new career. There are many board opportunities that will allow you to serve in an environment that you love, connect with like-minded people, and, at the same time, allow you to enhance your skill sets to position you for your next career.
How do you start getting involved?👇
Depending on where you are in your career this may differ slightly. For instance, if you are in an entry to mid-level, management position, consider joining an associate board. However, if you are in a senior-level position, joining a traditional governing board might be better for you. Whatever stage you are at in your career, you'll need to research organizations or companies with value-based missions you’re passionate about to get the most out of board service. Then you’ll happily give your time and energy to build new skills that will increase your marketability.
A great way to do this is through LinkedIn>Job Search>Board Service.
What happens next?👇
Once you have identified the kind of board you are interested in engaging in, think about the benefits
- You want to gain from being a member:
- Do you want to learn more about governance and leadership?
- Are you interested in enhancing your network?
- Is your focus more on giving your time and resources back to your community?
- Does the mission of the nonprofit resonate with you?
Whatever your reason for joining, let that guide your motivation to serve.
I understand life gets busy. If you need a push in your career, know that it’s okay to volunteer for a good cause. Ultimately, board service can only be in your favor to get you to where you want.
