Over the past few months, I've been in charge of the hiring process at my job. I assumed that, since I've managed this task before, it would be seamless, right? A person applies, they meet the qualifications, a screener interview is set, and the rest is history.
However, while this may still be the standard process, the way individuals are showing up to interviews has changed. Call it the Gen Z workforce.
If you are a Gen Z entering the nonprofit workforce, while it’s service-driven, here are ten tips to ensure you are managing the hiring process correctly.
1. Dress Professionally: First impressions matter, and professional attire shows you take the opportunity seriously.
2. Minimize Disclosing Personal Information: Avoid sharing personal details such as mental health diagnoses during the initial stages of the interview process.
3. Provide Thorough Responses: Use the STARR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection) to give structured and comprehensive answers to questions.
4. Research the Organization: Understand the mission, values, and recent developments of the organization you’re applying to.
5. Show Enthusiasm and Understanding of the Role: Demonstrate your passion for the position and your knowledge of what it entails.
6. Soul Search: Reflect on why you want this role and career path to convey genuine interest during the interview.
7. Bring a Copy of Your Resume: It never hurts to have a physical copy on hand, even though it might seem old-fashioned.
8. Minimize Text Message Style Communication in Emails: Keep your email correspondence professional and avoid informal language.
9. Manage Expectations: Remember that the hiring process is a two-way street; it's not just about what the company can do for you.
10. Say Thank You: A simple thank-you note post-interview can leave a lasting positive impression.
As a Gen Z professional, navigating the interviewing process is different in today's climate.
The use of technology, the normalization of expressing emotions, and the evolving workplace dynamics have created a shift in how you present yourself.
Traditional interviewing techniques remain highly effective. For additional resources, visit the support section on my blog, and connect with me on social media for career tips.
