Let's be honest, do you always feel 100% confident and relaxed at work every day? I don't. Whatever the cause of your uneasiness, I'm sure it doesn't feel good. It may feel a bit scary.
Feeling uneasy at work at times is common, and so are common fears like not being liked by your boss, having little decision-making influence, or the overall fear that you will be fired. In fact, most of us can relate to those moments when work-related uneasiness creeps in. It's not a pleasant feeling; it can even be a little bit scary.
The truth is, that experiencing unease at work is a common occurrence. It often manifests in the form of fears that many of us share. Perhaps you worry about not being in your boss's good books, feel like you lack the power to influence decisions, or even harbor that ever-looming dread of being shown the door.
Let's call these fears your "work monsters”. They are hard to fight yet are capable of overcoming with small practices such as:
👹 Changing Your Mindset. Start by paying attention to the way you speak to yourself. Self-talk has a significant impact on how you perceive your challenges.
😈 Practicing Forgiveness. Everyone makes mistakes or misses a deadline now and then. Instead of dwelling on these slip-ups, learn to forgive yourself and others.
👹 Reducing Self-Imposed Pressure. Often, we're our harshest critics. Ease up on the pressure you put on yourself and those around you.
These are just a few strategies to begin your journey toward overcoming your work monsters. There's no one-size-fits-all solution, but by implementing these practices, you'll find yourself better equipped to deal with the challenges that arise in the workplace.
So, now it's your turn: Do you have any work monsters of your own? If so, what practices are you using to tame them and make your nonprofit work life more manageable and enjoyable?
