Yesterday, was a celestial event that is expected to occur again in 2037- a super blue moon. It’s said that the super blue moon heights our emotions and connections with others.
What better way to close the month, with a blog post focused on your career search and dating. A few years ago, I wrote a similar article and thought it would be fitting with this unique event.
We’re all familiar with the challenges of dating, but navigating the job market can be equally daunting. Can the insights we gain from dating actually aid us in our quest for the perfect job? While opinions on this topic may differ, one thing’s for certain: you should approach your job search with the same level of determination you’d put into finding “the one” – or at least, the right fit for now.
Here are some valuable pointers to consider:
1.Embrace Variety – Sure, it’s easy to stay cozy at home, scrolling through endless online job listings and submitting applications at random. But to truly succeed, you need to step out of your comfort zone. A recent ABC News report reveals that a staggering 80% of jobs are secured through networking. This might involve attending formal networking events hosted by organizations like YNPN Chicago or tapping into your personal network of friends, family, former classmates, or colleagues. Similar to dating, sticking to just one approach – whether it’s exclusively online dating or meeting people at a favorite local spot – often yields predictable outcomes.
2. Think Beyond Conventions – Just like everyone has their dating “types” and deal breakers, it’s easy to pigeonhole your job search. However, by staying open-minded, you increase your odds of discovering unexpected and rewarding opportunities. When hunting for jobs, try exploring titles that differ from your usual preferences, organizations of varying sizes, and positions that might initially seem out of your league. A narrow focus could lead you to miss out on significant chances.
3. Shed Unnecessary Baggage – The search for a genuinely compatible partner can be emotionally taxing, much like job hunting. Rejection can trigger self-doubt, a drop in confidence, and even the urge to quit. A crucial skill for any job seeker is the ability to persevere even after hearing “No” or receiving no response from potential employers. Moreover, if a certain job prospect doesn’t feel right, it’s essential to step away and analyze why it’s not the right fit. In both job searching and personal life, self-assessment and letting go of what’s not working are vital steps towards reaching your goals.
4.Master the Interview – Be it the inaugural interview or a first date, you’re under scrutiny. Keep in mind that interviewers generally ask questions that fall into three categories:
• Can you effectively perform the job?
• Will you commit for the long term?
• Are you someone we’d enjoy working alongside?
Craft your responses in a way that reinforces your positive response to these questions. Wishing you the best of luck in both your job search and your romantic pursuits! Until the next super blue moon!
Best of luck!
