The ABCs: Letting Fate Provide Your Next Nonprofit Career Opportunity

Call it faith, serendipity, or the ABCs. There are people in life whose career opportunities always come to them. They do not have to do much to find their next career opportunity. Fate leads the way.

Why is that? I do not know.

While there isn’t a specific rhyme or reason for how this happens, I think your attitude, behavior, and how you exemplify care in the workplace play a part. Being mindful of your attitude, behavior, and care can help you welcome fate into your career path - the ABC’s:

1. Attitude - minimize the negative chatter. We spend the majority of our day at work. It is easy to see it as a place to socialize and make friends with colleagues. However, befriending coworkers shouldn’t surpass gossiping about office policies or peers. If you are constantly entertaining bad-mouthing a coworker or expressing your frustration with how things are getting done at work, then; you sabotage your chance of being seen as someone who has a positive and trustworthy attitude.

2. Behavior - give 100% in your work projects or assignments. By 100%, I mean to demonstrate you care about producing good work even if you are not passionate about the task at hand or your current role at the organization. No matter how you feel, give your all in the work that you do.

3. Care - the workplace is collaborative. Extend a helping hand to another colleague or department. Join a committee, assist in planning the next holiday social, or ask a teammate if they can use your support. When you work well with others, people see it. It also allows you to demonstrate your skills to people beyond your department or team. Show you care!

The ABCs are not as easy as reciting them, hahaha. It is also not the secret to landing new opportunities without having to put in the work. The point is, you can be thought about for future career opportunities if you focus on being a leader that is supportive, passionate about your work and the organization’s mission. You never know-fate may lead you to your next nonprofit career position.

 Best of luck!
